Things have calmed down for Tyra

October sounds a little less hectic for Tyra than September. Her school is more healthy, and she has a new job. She has not heard back from the technical college she applied to, though. But she’s got a Plan B. Read the full interview below.

Meet the Class gets updated each month from September to May. Each installment features an interview about both the facts and the feelings of where the student is in the process.

Interviews may be edited lightly for clarity and grammar. Names may be changed to protect privacy.

When I heard from you last month, school was a mess. Covid had swept through, and the school was struggling to make your time on campus valuable. Have things calmed down? Got worse? How's your day-today life going?

To begin, things have calmed down a tad. A mask mandate has been put in for those who can't sit six feet apart in class. I got a new job at a local pizza place and work all the time. Other than that, large group speech season is starting and I love speech, it is the one true talent that I have.

Have you heard anything from your school application? Do you have a Plan B in case things fall through there for any reason?

I still have not heard anything, I did, however, find a school about the same distance away and am on a waitlist for their program so that is my plan B.

What do you do to keep yourself motivated and grounded during this fall's chaos? (As I write this, we're still waiting to learn who won the presidential election, so who knows how much more chaotic things may get.)

I tend to sleep a lot to escape the world, other than that I love gaming. I usually play the Sims but also Phasmophobia and Among Us with friends. I also babysit two boys for a family friend of ours. As for the election, I live in a super rural area and now that Biden has won it’s going to get chaotic. My area is extremely republican, like no signs in my county that are not for Trump.

How is Yearbook going? I imagine social distancing makes that a little difficult. How will the yearbook be different this year than in the past? And how did the senior photo go for everyone?

The senior photo turned out better than expected. It was a mess, the day was cold and had freezing rain. But we did get one shot of all 65 that turned out really well.

The yearbook staff is doing okay, its a little messy because we only have 5 veterans out of 13 so we have to teach a lot of newbies. We also have group photos coming up where we take group shots of FFA, band, choir, speech, art, and more.

Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed this post, here are three easy things you can do:

  1. Share it on your social media feeds so your friends and colleagues can see it too.

  2. Check out interviews with other Meet the Class seniors.

  3. Ask a question in the comments section.
