For Three Quick Questions, I send the same three questions to admissions representatives at colleges all over the country (the subject line of the e-mail is “Three quick questions”), and then I hope to hear back from them. When I do, I’ll post them on Apply with Sanity. It’s that simple.
The three questions are meant to probe some of the things that make a school unique but that aren’t easily captured as a stat to go in a book or web search.
This response is from Cassie Rodriguez, Admissions Counselor at Baylor University.
What is a course, tradition, program or event that is unique to Baylor University?
Running the Baylor Line: Our first-year students get to participate in one of the most unique fan section traditions in all of collegiate sports. Right before kickoff at each Baylor home football game, our entire freshman class gets to run across the field at McLane Stadium and form a human tunnel for the football team to run through. Right after this, they get to take their seats right at the front of our student section, front row seats right behind the opposing team's bench where they get to yell, shout and cheer our Bears on to victory every game of their Freshman year.
Baylor Homecoming: Baylor had its first homecoming celebration in 1909, making it the first ever collegiate homecoming in the nation. It is a huge event on Baylor's campus where former students and their families all meet together to celebrate the Baylor spirit with a variety of activities including class reunions, special ceremonies, the homecoming bonfire, the nation's largest and longest homecoming parade and the homecoming football game.
Naturally every college wants to recruit the perfect student--high grades, high test scores, involved in their community, leadership...everything. But what kinds of imperfect students tend to flourish at Baylor?
As far as incoming students, academics are definitely the biggest part of the application review process. However, we also try and find students that we think would be a great fit for Baylor in alignment with our mission for the university. We have a holistic review process, and want every student who comes to Baylor to find continued academic success and to love being a Baylor bear. We find that these are the types of students who tend to thrive on our campus!
When people come to visit Baylor, what's a place off campus that you recommend they check out while they're there?
As far as off-campus places to visit, I would highly recommend a local Waco restaurant called George’s. They are known for their wide variety of menu options and award-winning chicken fried steak! I would also recommend visiting the Silos, as this is a huge tourist attraction in Waco. If you know of any fans of HGTV’s Fixer Upper, the Silos are a must-see.
Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed this post, here are three easy things you can do:
Share it on your social media feeds so your friends and colleagues can see it too.
See which other colleges and universities answered the questions.
Is there a school you’d like to hear from? Let me know, and I’ll make sure they get the questions.
Apply with Sanity doesn’t have ads or annoying pop-ups. It doesn’t share user data, sell user data, or even track personal data. It doesn’t do anything to “monetize” you. You’re nothing but a reader to me, and that means everything to me.
