Meet Breya

Breya is the fourth—and final—Meet the Class senior to introduce. She’s currently in Ohio, but looking to study someplace new next year. Read about Breya below. The next round of interviews will happen the first week of October.

Meet the Class gets updated each month from September to May. Each installment features an interview about both the facts and the feelings of where the student is in the process.

Interviews may be edited lightly for clarity and grammar. Names may be changed to protect privacy.

Breya attends a public high school in Ohio

Tell me about your high school. Around how many students does it have? Is it public, private? A magnet school or one with any special focus?

My school is a public, career pathway based school. There are around 900 students at this school.

Have you already started school for the year? When did you begin or will you begin? Are you on campus, online only, or hybrid? How’s it going for you?

Today was my first day of school. My school district is doing online only for the first nine weeks and then reevaluating after. It is going pretty well so far, but it is only my first day so I’m not sure yet.

How much of a focus is college for your peers? What’s the mood of the senior class right now?

With my peers, many are changing their minds about going to college. I think they might be scared or nervous with everything that’s been happening and changing. I don’t think I will ever change my mind. I have wanted to go to college for forever.

How are you feeling about the college admissions season coming up? How prepared do you feel for all that’s going to be asked of you?

I’m nervous and excited about the college admissions coming up. I feel fairly prepared. I haven’t started my essays but I have all of my recommendation letters set up and going forward.

Have you taken an SAT or ACT lately? Do you expect to be submitting test scores for applications?

I took the ACT last year and plan to take it next week, along with the SAT. Depending on my scores, I will be considering submitting them. If they aren’t good, I’d rather not.

How complete is your college list right now? What schools are you already sure you’ll apply to? What else is currently on your list, even if you may drop it from your list?

My college list is completely finished. I surely want to apply to UPenn, NYU, and John Hopkins. I have a few HBCU’s, another Ivy League, and some safeties in Ohio.

What are you looking for in a college? What’s most important to you?

I want to really go to college out of state. I’d also like to go to one that offers an amazing study abroad program. What’s most important to me is diversity, graduation rate/success, and their academic levels.

Have you been on any college campuses, either for a tour or for any other reason? How familiar/comfortable are you with being on a college campus?

I have been to many campuses, mostly for school field trips. I love being on campuses that are well put together. I like seeing and learning new things about different places, so visiting new campuses every now and then is a plus for me.

Are you a first-generation college student?

No, I am not. My dad has two degrees and my mom has one.

Is college something that’s expected for you, or does it feel like more of an option?

College is very much expected for me as that is all I ever wanted. I knew what I wanted and I’m almost there.

Is there anything you currently don’t know about the college application process that you wish you did?

The fact that I might not get the financial aid I need for college really made me nervous as I come from a low-income family and I want to go to college.

Is there anything else about you that would be important or interesting to know?

I like to write and even though that won’t be involved in my major, I am in the process of writing a book.
